Recently, CMN Hospitals at Gundersen Health System hosted a heartwarming event in honor of the Panda Cares Center of Hope, celebrating the impactful partnership between Panda Express and the pediatric healthcare community. This collaboration has made a significant difference in the lives of young patients and their families, and the event served as a recognition of that commitment.
A Day of Impact and Engagement
Representatives from Panda Express gathered at Emplify Health by Gundersen’s main hospital lobby to kick off the event. The atmosphere was filled with excitement as attendees prepared to learn more about the positive effects of their support on pediatric patients.
The program commenced in the Inpatient Pediatric lobby, featuring remarks from a Panda Express representative, CMN leadership and president of the Gundersen Medical Foundation, Dr. Stephen Shapiro. They highlighted the importance of community support in enhancing the healthcare experience for children and how vital the partnership is between Children’s Miracle Network, Panda Express, and Panda Cares Center of Hope.
One of the highlights of the event was the check presentation photo, symbolizing the lifetime fundraising efforts of Panda Express and Panda Cares Center of Hope. This funding has been instrumental in acquiring resources like the Touch2Play machine, which was recently introduced in the pediatric waiting area. This innovative device allows pediatric patients to step out of their hospital rooms, engage in play, and distract themselves from their medical situations, fostering a sense of normalcy and joy.
A Special Guest: 2025 CMN Hero Liam
Adding a personal touch to the event, one of CMN’s five Heroes, Liam, was present with his dad, Trent. Liam shared his inspiring medical journey with Type 1 diabetes, discussing what it was like to be in the hospital and how the Touch2Play machine can help other children in similar situations. He also spoke about the significant impact CMN has had on his life, particularly in obtaining the diabetes equipment and medications he needs to manage his condition. Liam’s story resonated deeply with everyone in attendance, showcasing the real-life effects of the support provided by organizations like Panda Express and CMN Hospitals.
Hands-On Activities and Tours
After the initial program, attendees broke into small groups for hands-on activities. One such activity involved making pinwheels, which are not only fun but also serve a therapeutic purpose by assisting with pediatric lung capacity and respiration exercises.
At 11 AM, the group embarked on a tour of the pediatric spaces, including Peds Oncology, Inpatient Pediatrics, NICU, and PICU. Jessica, a child life specialist, provided information about the tools that assist with patient education and distraction each day and how critical the funds that Panda Express is raising truly are. This tour provided Panda representatives with a firsthand look at the environments where their contributions are making a difference. The emotional impact of seeing the spaces where children receive care was palpable, reinforcing the importance of their support.
The event concluded with final remarks, followed by a lunch in the hospital cafeteria. This gathering allowed for further connection and conversation among attendees, solidifying the bonds formed through their shared mission. This CMN Hospitals region will have another Panda Express opening this year and preparations for that partnership and for future hospital tours were made.
